Democracy by Design: How Online News Can Contribute

This is for a Speaker in the category for a Beginner audience.

The Engaging News Project aims to find digital news innovations that promote both business and democratic goals. The project tests web-based strategies for informing audiences, promoting substantive discourse, and helping citizens to understand diverse views. At the same time, we analyze business outcomes, such as clicks and time on page. Systematic testing provides valuable information about what works … and what doesn’t.

In this session, we would review our recent and most promising research results on strategies and tools that promote audience engagement. We have several experiments under way right now on restructuring comment sections and streamlining web design that will be ready to share by the conference. We also will be launching a new quiz tool that we could share at ONA.

We would welcome other speakers with related interests and would be happy to work with ONA to identify other panelists within our network and to secure their participation. This could include representatives from news organizations doing work related to the Engaging News Project, other academics pursuing similar research, and/or other grant-funded projects in the online journalism space. We also could bring several Engaging News Project team members to discuss different studies we have completed and various aspects of the project for a single session.

How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?

Engaging News Project team members would bring gender and geographic (Texas, Wyoming, Indiana, and New Jersey) diversity to ONA14. Our team is relatively young and has not attended ONA in the past, allowing us to introduce new voices to the conference. We also believe that our approach of uniting academia and industry is a fresh perspective on bridging these fields.

What will your audience have gained by the time your session is over?
