Literature, Art, Music, Poetry: How the analog humanities can help us think about digital journalism

This is for a Speaker in the category for a Beginner audience.

What can journalists learn from computer science? Entrepreneurship? Game design? Social science? What’s the cutting edge?

We’ve all seen those sessions. Let’s go in a different direction.

Journalism has incorporated practices and methods from other fields throughout its history. Despite how fields are generally siloed, reality is much more interdisciplinary. The analog humanities offer many important lessons for digital journalists.

Take Ada Lovelace, for example. Considered the first programmer, her creativity in mathematics was partly influenced by her father, Lord Byron. She considered her field a “poetical science.”

Learn how Ada and others drew upon the humanities in their work to break new ground and how you can do the same in your newsroom.

The session will begin with a conceptual introduction, concrete examples and lessons before transitioning to a moderated discussion where participants can share their inspirations from the humanities or other fields.

How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?

This session contributes to the diversity of ideas shared at the conference. The goal is similar to Laura Amico's session at ONA13 on jazz and journalism: to help participants think more broadly about digital journalism, particularly how lessons from other fields can better inform their work.

What will your audience have gained by the time your session is over?
