Setrakian spent more than five years as a foreign correspondent for ABC News and Bloomberg Television, covering the Middle East. She has since focused on the fusion of news and technology; her team's first platform, Syria Deeply, launched in December 2012 to wide acclaim. TIME Magazine dubbed Syria Deeply “The Future of News,” while Fast Company said it “outsmarts the news business, redefines crisis coverage.” The National Press Foundation gave Syria Deeply its 2014 Excellence in Online Journalism Award. News Deeply has since announced plans to expand to new Deeply topics, covering complex issues that are underreported in the mainstream press. As a fellow of Columbia University's Tow Center-Knight for Digital Journalism, Lara has published in-depth research on the startup newsroom, chronicling best practices at the frontier of media innovation.
