Houston is a Professor and the Knight Chair in Investigative at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign where he also oversees an award-winning online newsroom. Before joining the University, he was executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) for more than a decade and a part-time professor at the University of Missouri. He was an investigative reporter and a database editor during his 17 years as a journalist at metropolitan newspapers, where he won national and local investigative awards. He is a co-founder and board chair of the Global Investigative Journalism Network and board chair of the Investigative News Network. He was co-author of the fourth and fifth editions of The Investigative Reporters's Handbook and has just completed the fourth edition of Computer-Assisted Reporting: A Practical Guide.
