Based in London, Bell leads the operation to source and verify user-generated content so that the AP can acquire and then publish that content across formats. Since early 2011, he has worked to establish the verification processes and editorial standards for UGC and social newsgathering at the AP. He also trains and advises AP’s global staff in UGC acquisition and social media monitoring during news events. In October 2013, Bell co-founded a committee for the Online News Association that will look at the ethics and standards of UGC and digital newsgathering in the news industry. A graduate of the University of Leeds, he joined the AP in 2006 after working for ITN, CNN and radio stations across the UK.
