My involvement in journalism groups like NAHJ, CCNMA, and ONA have been a result of a deep desire to help other fellow journalists develop the skills and connections to advance their careers.
My journalism career began in 2005 when I went on to work as an education reporter for a small daily in eastern Washington state. From there I went to cover the public safety beat at the Santa Maria Times in California’s central coast. In 2007 I delved into magazine publishing, creating and selling native advertising for a small trade publication. My introduction to social media came via Mediabistro courses and hands-on experience handling Facebook marketing campaigns. I eventually went on to become a regular social media marketing instructor for New York-based Mediabistro.
Like most web producers today, I began my hand in online publishing through WordPress and Twitter. In 2011 I went on to work as a “breaking news” producer for Ora TV’s Newsbreaker. Soon after I landed as a web producer intern at Southern California Public Radio where I helped grow its online audience in six months. From there I jumped to a short stint at Yahoo, followed by another one at Inside.com. And on April 2014, the Investigative News Network hired me as its business editor. In my role as INN editor, I am in charge of documenting one of the largest experiments in sustainability at nonprofit newsrooms. Additionally, I manage much of the organization’s editorial content and social media accounts.
On my spare time, I teach digital marketing at the California State University in Fullerton, and I mentor up-and-coming young journalists and help organize networking events.
