This is for a Workshop in the category for a Beginner audience.
Last year, Google launched an explorable time-lapse view of our planet in the form of an interactive map (earthengine.google.org/timelapse). This time-lapse Earth enables people to explore the last 29 years of our planet’s history and see stunning changes such as urban growth, deforestation, mountaintop removal and much more. Since then, scientists, academics, non-profits and journalists have been using Timelapse to visually communicate their stories. This workshop will focus on the geospatial cloud computing platform used to build Timelapse, Google Earth Engine; how we’ve been exposing these geospatial services for anyone to easily and intuitively access from a browser; and how you can customize Timelapse to build embeddable, interactive maps and HD videos for use in your investigative, science and environmental coverage. Laptops encouraged for hands-on demos and exercises.
How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?
Earth Engine is a relatively new effort at Google, and we see huge storytelling potential with the analysis tools and data it makes widely available. ONA would be the third time we've presented on this topic to the journalism crowd (NICAR and TechRaking being the first two opportunities). We hope by presenting this at ONA, we can continue to hear feedback directly from journalists on how these tools can—and could with additional features—benefit their storytelling.
What will your audience have gained by the time your session is over?
