This is for a Workshop in the category for a Intermediate audience.
MLive.com in Michigan is run by eight daily newspapers and two expansion markets in Lansing and Detroit. The two expansion markets are critical to MLive’s goal of creating Michigan’s only statewide news source, and both have had tremendous success building audience by assigning beat reporters to cover local news outside of MLive’s legacy print markets.
The workshop would present a brief overview of MLive’s expansion efforts, and then challenge participants to think of ways they can expand local coverage using digital journalism. Presenters would guide small group brainstorming with questions and outlines, and then bring everyone together at the end to share ideas.
Critical issues: What are your priorities? What do readers need? How do you train reporters in expansion markets? Can you make tough decisions?
How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?
By offering a hands-on, notes-from-the-field approach to challenge news leaders to use online journalism to not only maintain, but expand, local news reporting
What will your audience have gained by the time your session is over?
