Hacking the Hackathon: How to Organize a Datafest Your Fellow Journalists Will Thank You For

This is for a Panel in the category for a Beginner audience.

So many journalists are being told to work with data, but they have no clue what it means or where to begin. So many open data advocates want to bring journalists on side, but they don’t what they need or how to reach them. We unpack the growing popularity of hackathons to ask: why journalists should care? what are the strengths and limitations of the hackathon format? what are the essential ingredients of a successful hackathon, and what are the pitfalls? This would be primarily a sharing of experiences by panellists who have organized hackathons – including one (me) who organized a hackathon without ever having participated in one before. The aim would be to get beyond the hype and see if hackathons bring something valuable and sustainable to online journalism.
