Kovaka is Special Counsel with Cooley LLP and serves as General Counsel for ONA. He has advised and defended journalists throughout the country for more than 20 years. As a newsroom lawyer, Kovaka has worked with journalists in every medium, helping them to tell their stories fully and safely. As a First Amendment litigator, he has defended scores of claims against news organizations, including cases arising out of reporting on the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, the Branch Davidian siege in Waco, the Atlanta Olympic Park bombing, and Michael Bloomberg’s crackdown on illegal guns sales in New York City. Internationally, he has represented journalists in Canada and Kosovo and worked on the constitutional reform process in South Sudan. Kovaka is a graduate of Stanford Law School and Stony Brook University.
